Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular calls from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
